Day One Journal: Private Diary App Reviews

I purchased Day One a few years back and used it regularly for a while. It eventually fell out of my graces and I moved on to more robust apps. I decided to give it a go again and WOW what an improvement. The multiple journals is the best feature. I use Day One now like I used Evernote. If I had to gripe about something it would be the app is a little slow when you do a lot of writing. When my word count climbs past 500 the app acts like its chugging to keep up. I think its just a syncing issue and should be a quick fix. Other than that... worth the price.

Lost a very long entry immediately after saving. Rebooted and retyped an even longer one. Lost again. After 3 years Im think that I might return to using Momento.

The app is good for keeping a journal but I wish it had the ability to record voice notes.

I recently took a trip through Alaska, including going fairly deep into the Brooks Range mountains in the north. There were no cellular connections for hundreds of miles. I wanted to mark and remember some of the major places I visited, so I took photos and journaled them with some text in Day One. To my delight, GPS locations still worked! So I was able to easily mark the furthest north Ive been along with my thoughts about it. It all worked great. Once I was back in the connected world everything syncd back up. DayOne can be a wonderful thing to take along when camping or exploring when outside of cell phone range (which can be a great place to be) - you can still take pictures and track your location and personal thoughts when completely offline.

After the app I had been using for many years to keep my journal began experiencing problems with iOS10, I decided it was time to look for a replacement app. After trying dozens of journaling apps, it was clear that Dayone offered the best set of features in stable package. Very pleased.

Yes, the developer released a new version of that app and charged for it again. But they are constantly improving the app, adding features and tweaking small things to make it better. This app is seriously amazing, and Im happy to support the team. Journaling is an incredibly valuable practice, and Day One is my favorite means of practicing it!

I never spend money on apps, but I use this app daily and expected the new version to be amazing. Instead it has been a huge disappointment. In fact the only benefit of the new version over the old one is that you can post more than one picture to a days entry. Unfortunately, everything else is a mess. It crashes every 2 minutes (when I scroll down looking for dates, the screen just goes white) so I have to exit out and then come back. Also, in the old version, when you put in an entry for a date in the past, when you saved the entry and went back to the journal, it would put you back in that year and date so you could see all the entries around your new entry. This made it really easy to find a date without going into the calendar, which is laborious. Now, you have to scroll, which takes a long time. I hate that. Wish they had left that feature and frankly I wish I had never upgraded. Never had these issues with the original app. If anyone knows how I can go back, pls tell me. Hate the new version. :(

I know this app got a lot of heat because of upgrade charge, but it really does work well and reliably and good development oat money

This app has changed my life. Never did I take journaling as an important thing till I took the plunge and bought in to Day One Classic. Eagerly picked up this version as soon as it was released and its awesome as its been since February! Frequent updates and bug fixes are released making this app even better without over complicating the interface. Journaling has been and continues to be the heart of this app. If youre not into it now, this app will change you just like it did for me. Although full private key encryption hasnt arrived yet, understand it takes a lot of time to get it right on a scale that Day One has to do! Still very much worth the cost. Use it often to record whatever you want and when you look back later it makes you happy that you took the time to record it. The map showing your locations of entry is also just fantastic. You wont regret purchasing this!

When it gets secure key encryption to protect it it will be perfect because it is almost perfect now for journaling.

I really want to use this app because Ive been using DayOne Classic for a couple of years. But the way this app stores your data, isnt safe. They are stored as individual files. As text files and photos and they can be opened with any text editor. There is no privacy when it comes to the widgets. No matter if you put a password, you can see photos and other information on your phones home screen without unlocking it. I dont like this proprietary syncing limit. Password for your journal is only 4 digits. Should be 6 or more. DayOne replied to an user that in version 2.1 there will be encryption and other sync options and I dont see that just yet.

I use Day One more than any other app on my iPhone. I only wish I could save my videos. Im not complaining just wishing.

Ive tried several journaling apps and this one is the best BY FAR! Its great to be able to have a digital, private journal that is always with you and that automatically records so much great data. Having different journals also makes it easy to properly record the moments you want a record of. Highly recommend!

App is well designed and functions well for the most part. The few bugs that exist pale in comparison to all that this app offers

I have been complaining about their terrible service. However, I just noticed that now it only takes one day to have their replay and they actually answer my questions! Im so impressed and I think they are working hard to improve their service. They have promised an end-to-end encryption since they forced users to use their DayOne sync. The DayOne sync works well. However, without the end-to-end encryption, users data are openly available to any person who has access to DayOnes server. That is, anyone in DayOne or his/her friends can read your dairy, for fun or for any other reason. Of course they promised that only some key employees can access to your data in a certain situation. But it is just a "promise". They also promised to have the end-to-end encryption by May 2016 and now its October, did they keep their promise? Not to say if their server is hacked, all your personal information, your diary and secret are all available to anyone on the internet. I like this app, it is no doubt the best journal app in the market. Good design, good functionality, and now, good service. However, without the end-to-end encryption, I dont feel safe having my personal data and diary on their server, especially with their record of not keeping the promise.
